Description:
Dark Matter Postdoctoral Fellow (Physics) - 83140
Organization: PH-Physics
Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental Particle Physics. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), on analysis of data from the LUX experiment, and on R&D; toward future noble liquid-based dark matter detectors. LBNL (http://www.lbl.gov/) is the lead Department of Energy Laboratory for both LZ and LUX. Together with UC Berkeley, we have a strong group with expertise in the design and construction of noble liquid Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detectors and their operation in the search for dark matter.
LZ, a next-generation direct detection dark matter experiment that will be at least 100 times more sensitive than its predecessor, is currently under construction and will be installed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The candidate will participate in the design and construction of technical systems for the experiment, including testing of prototypes and prototype systems. In addition the candidate will contribute to the software development and data analysis of the experiment.
For LUX, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the analysis of the full data set that has been obtained and contribute to the science analysis and the preparation of results for publication.
At Berkeley Lab, we have a vibrant group that is actively pursuing a number of novel ideas in R&D; for next generation dark matter experiments. The successful candidate is expected to pursue R&D.; He or she may do this work in collaboration and may direct graduate and undergraduate students.
Position Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Physics awarded in 2016 or should expect to receive a Ph.D. by the fall of 2017.
• At least one year of experience in Experimental Particle Physics research.
• Evidence of potential for high level of achievement as an independent researcher.
• Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals.
The position will be awarded initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension. To assure full consideration, applications should be received by January 6, 2017.
