The Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) at Northwestern University invites applications for the position of Director of Operations. CIERA is a University Research Center on Northwestern's Evanston campus, located on the shore of Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago. CIERA's mission is to advance astronomy and astrophysics research and education at Northwestern, through a wide range of activities, including a Prize Postdoctoral Fellowship program, a vigorous visitors’ program, and a wide range education and public outreach programs. Special emphasis is given to enabling interdisciplinary projects and collaborations with researchers from other disciplines (e.g., planetary sciences, computer science, applied math, statistics, material sciences, electrical and mechanical engineering, and science education). The Director of Operations position is a senior, PhD-level, staff scientist position equivalent to those at other astronomy institutions, combining science and other high-level administrative responsibilities with part-time research activities. The Director of Operations works closely with the CIERA Director and CIERA scientists, and supervises other CIERA administrative staff to ensure smooth and successful day-to-day CIERA operations. Examples of responsibilities include: overseeing office-space, facilities, and computing needs; assisting in financial planning, in finding appropriate research funding opportunities, and in research proposal preparation; guiding CIERA staff in event organization, finances, and communications; contributing to the development of interdisciplinary connections; supplying scientific input to the planning for visitors’ schedules; contributing to CIERA postdoc hiring and helping introduce postdocs to CIERA activities; preparing CIERA annual reports and tracking other metrics; connecting with other offices throughout the University, as appropriate. If of interest, the Director of Operations will be able to pursue an independent research program in any area of astronomy and astrophysics (with the option of being appointed as Research Faculty, pending Department & School approval), and will have the opportunity to work with CIERA researchers, including students, postdocs, and faculty. A PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics is required. No formal management experience is required, but strong evidence for management, supervision of multiple projects, multi-tasking, and organizational skills is highly desirable. The candidate must be self-motivated, energetic, and able to work independently, bring projects to conclusion, and have the quality interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, visitors, university administrators, grant sponsors, foundations, and donors. The application should include a curriculum vitae, a one-page research statement, and the applicant must arrange for a minimum of 2 letters of reference to be sent. Letters should address the critical skills mentioned here. All materials should be submitted electronically at Academic Jobs Online, position 9079. For questions about the application process please contact Gretchen Oehlschlager at CIERA-Jobs@northwestern.edu. CIERA has a strong commitment to the achievement of excellence through diversity among its faculty and staff. AA/EOE.
